| Ardath Road Realignment |
La Jolla, CA |
Infrastructure |
|
Project Description:"The Ardath Road project included the reconfiguration of this heavily traveled intersection at North Torrey Pines Road to improve traffic safety and to create a gateway into La Jolla. Project alternatives were presented to the community at a public workshop. The selected project alternative included the relocation of the existing mature Torrey Pine trees that were boxed and stored for protection during the two year construction period. These trees were replanted in a similar massing formation as they were originally located.
Entering into La Jolla, the stately Canary Island Palm trees aligning both sides of Ardath Road create a strong entry statement along with the broadheaded canopy and accent trees. The understory plant material is low growing with a variety of colors and textures for visual interest."

Infrastructure |

Project Description:"The Ballpark Infrastructure Project was constructed in the heart of the developing ‘East Village’ in downtown San Diego. The project included selective improvements on existing and proposed streets surrounding Petco Park. KTU+A’s scope included design development of multiple streets and park areas based on the conceptual master plan; and construction documents and construction administration for the streetscapes from Harbor Drive to Library Circle at the crossing of 12th Avenue, Tailgate Park, temporary parking areas D1 and D2, and the connection to the Linear Park and the nearby trolley station. KTU+A’s main challenge was to maintain the design intent of the approved San Diego’s Ballpark Neighborhood Streetscape Master Plan (November 1999) and the changes agreed to by the multiple stakeholders. The coordination with multiple stakeholders was of the utmost importance in this process. Ensuring that the City of San Diego, the Padres’ organization, Centre City Development Corporation, Environmental Health Coalition, East Village, private developers, and other stakeholders concerns and standards were incorporated in the construction documents was a driving force on the project.
KTU+A provided a full scope of landscape architectural services for Tailgate Park, an important pedestrian connection to Petco Park. The urban design aspects respond to the major growth the area is experiencing now, and will see in the future. The site is encompassed by a trellis system, including a major trellis portal through which Park users access routes to the stadium. A series of formal gardens enhance use of the parking lot where users enjoy the “tailgate” experience of causal BBQ’s and get-togethers.

| Bayshore Bikeway |
San Diego, CA |
Mobility |
|
Project Description:KTU+A was a member of the engineering team responsible for assessing the alternative routes, issues and potential solutions for a several mile section of new Class 1 bike facility along the south end of San Diego Bay. The Bayshore Bike Trail currently exists along several miles of the Coronado Strand and into a portion of the South Bay area within Imperial Beach. A major segment of trail, however, is missing in the South Bay due to existing land ownership. The alignment of the new portion of the trail evaluated the potential to use portions of the railroad right-of-way and along dikes of the Otay River on Western Salt property. KTU+A helped to identify needed connections, rank alternative routes and prepare interpretive opportunities. KTU+A prepared construction documents for fencing systems, seating areas, interpretive facilities and the renovation of several historic structures related to the old rail line. A visual impact assessment was also prepared to evaluate the visual impact to the historic resources of the railroad right-of-way.
